Kings Regional Service Commission
Statement on Reopening of the Nutrien Civic Centre
August 17, 2026
The Kings Regional Service Commission is pleased to learn that the Board of Directors of the Nutrien Civic Centre has made the decision to reopen the facility. The Civic Centre is an important regional asset that provides recreational, health and community services to residents throughout the Kings region.
The Civic Centre is supported through a combination of operating revenues and contributions from local governments. As of last Tuesday, $400,000 of the $600,000 in approved 2026 local government funding had been provided to the facility. Timing differences in the receipt of some approved funding contributed to short-term cash-flow pressures at the Centre.
The Commission’s understanding is that the immediate cash-flow issue related to local government funding has now been addressed, with approved contributions continuing to be provided on a monthly basis. We also understand that the Civic Centre Board is examining additional opportunities to strengthen revenues and improve the facility’s long-term financial sustainability.
Local government contributions are allocated based on population and tax base in accordance with the funding formula established under provincial legislation when participating local governments have not agreed upon an alternative formula. The overall annual contribution is established through the Regional Service Commission budget process following review of the Civic Centre’s proposed business plan, operating budget and financial requirements.
The Commission remains committed to working collaboratively with the Civic Centre Board, participating municipalities and the Province to support a sustainable future for this important regional facility.
